Moleskine, No More “Pen Holder Problem”

posted on March 28, 2009 in DIY, projects

I came up with my own solution to the Moleskine pen holder problem. As a gift to my friend Bryan, I butchered a Moleskin to stealthily hold nine colored pencils and a pencil sharpener. I found several tutorials on embedding other devices in a Moleskin but found that I had made the same mistakes experiences by the other hackers.

Getting Started in Linux

posted on January 31, 2009 in miscellaneous

After much nagging from some of my friends, I’ve finally made the switch to Linux. I am starting to realize that the skill set I’m developing is rather substantial and worth documenting. I’ll be taking the time over the next weeks and months to document the software and operation skills that and I am learning. My goal is to provide a list of tasks I can accomplish in Linux and to keep a record of my actions so that I can quickly set up new machines with my preferences. I am not intending this to be a “how to” guide for anyone else, although it may provide some usefulness to someone starting out with Linux.

To start off, I have installed Ubuntu 8.10 on both of my home machines. Each new Ubuntu release is given a name and 8.l10 is called Intrepid Ibex. I preformed both installs from a Live CD which allows me to run the OS from the CD-ROM without installing anything. I knew that I would enjoy it immediately so I chose to simply reformat both computers.

Day Hike, Inside The Perimeter.

posted on January 23, 2009 in adventures

Tuesday, I decided I needed an adventure so I threw together a little day hike. I have hiked the West Palisades Trail several times and decided to try the East Palisades Trail. The two trails wind through the east and west banks of the Chattahoochee river just inside Cobb County. The parks are within cycling distance of downtown.

3rd Annual Santa’s Little Messenger Race

posted on January 9, 2009 in adventures

This year’s race was an interesting one. As always, I was worried in the days leading up to the race that something would go wrong or no one will donate any toys. Despite some setbacks, this year was perhaps a bigger success than previous years, but it took a lot of self-convincing before I was able to admit it.

New Domain, New Moves.

posted on December 29, 2008 in miscellaneous

Just a quick update. I finally have my own domain: http://tir38.com. This blog will now be available at that domain, however, the old http://jason.ithought.org will still direct you to all the correct pages. Chris Kelly is still providing all of my excellent hosting and has upgraded the ithought machine with a lot of new hardware that I don’t really understand (honestly, I pay him so that I don’t have to understand). If you need hosting service, I couldn’t recommend anyone better. He’s organized everything into an easy-to-manage front page.

On another note, one of my proudest accomplishments of 2008 has to be a complete conversion over to Linux OS. I’m running Ubuntu 8.10 on my home machines. I’ll probably upgrade my work horse to a less “entry level” distro some time in the new year, but for now I’m enjoying being completely Windows free!

I have a lot of projects nearing completion and some other awesome news that I’ll post about in the new year. Happy 2009!
