Childhood Filmmakers

posted on December 2, 2009 in miscellaneous

Every time I go home for Thanksgiving, I discover some new artifact from my childhood. This time, it was a video that my friend, brother, and I made sometime when we were probably 11 or 12. I remember our family had a big bulky personal camcorder that had a stop-motion feature. It looked something like this:

Basically, you pushed a button and the camera took a short clip. We then moved the figures and pushed the button again. As with most things we did as kids, this was completely improvised. We also started experimenting by manually lengthening the clips and this allowed us to use a G.I. Joe toy to add sound effects. Its no Robot Chicken but we probably had fun making it.

I had a frayed power cord to an old lamp laying around and I didn’t want to just trash it.

Getting Started in Linux

posted on January 31, 2009 in miscellaneous

After much nagging from some of my friends, I’ve finally made the switch to Linux. I am starting to realize that the skill set I’m developing is rather substantial and worth documenting. I’ll be taking the time over the next weeks and months to document the software and operation skills that and I am learning. My goal is to provide a list of tasks I can accomplish in Linux and to keep a record of my actions so that I can quickly set up new machines with my preferences. I am not intending this to be a “how to” guide for anyone else, although it may provide some usefulness to someone starting out with Linux.

To start off, I have installed Ubuntu 8.10 on both of my home machines. Each new Ubuntu release is given a name and 8.10 is called Intrepid Ibex. I preformed both installs from a Live CD which allows me to run the OS from the CD-ROM without installing anything. I knew that I would enjoy it immediately so I chose to simply reformat both computers.

New Domain, New Moves.

posted on December 29, 2008 in miscellaneous

Just a quick update. I finally have my own domain: http://tir38.com. This blog will now be available at that domain, however, the old http://jason.ithought.org will still direct you to all the correct pages. Chris Kelly is still providing all of my excellent hosting and has upgraded the ithought machine with a lot of new hardware that I don’t really understand (honestly, I pay him so that I don’t have to understand). If you need hosting service, I couldn’t recommend anyone better. He’s organized everything into an easy-to-manage front page.

On another note, one of my proudest accomplishments of 2008 has to be a complete conversion over to Linux OS. I’m running Ubuntu 8.10 on my home machines. I’ll probably upgrade my work horse to a less “entry level” distro some time in the new year, but for now I’m enjoying being completely Windows free!

I have a lot of projects nearing completion and some other awesome news that I’ll post about in the new year. Happy 2009!
